20:16:22 darkblueB: FrankW: well I had a brief discussion with some folks about an OSGeo California chapter.. or Silicon Valley perhaps
20:17:10 FrankW: Good to hear.
20:17:12 darkblueB: Google - we'll see of anything comes of it
20:17:28 darkblueB: I said there were overlapping interests ...
20:17:34 FrankW: Did your session go well?
20:17:45 darkblueB: yes, very well.. thank you
20:17:45 FrankW: You were presenting/training today, right?
20:17:55 FrankW: cool
20:18:02 darkblueB: yes.. GeoServer did get some attention
20:18:11 FrankW: excellent
20:18:13 darkblueB: now they ( GeoServer ) has to back it up !
20:18:41 darkblueB: yeah.. the Google tech people are really good, but not all of them are up on the out of house innovations
20:18:45 darkblueB: not too surprising
20:18:58 FrankW: not surprising at all.
20:19:22 FrankW: In fact, in the "old days" when I worked at PCI I was mostly unaware of anything going outside the company.
20:19:34 darkblueB: yep....
20:19:36 FrankW: And I'm sure it is even easier to imagine the company is the whole world at Google.
20:20:12 darkblueB: so Summer of Code was mentioned.. and I was happy to report - honestly - that that has become a pivotal event for OSGeo
20:20:23 darkblueB: that went over well..
20:20:30 FrankW: yes indeed. In fact I got my shirt today!
20:20:34 darkblueB: :- )
20:20:48 TylerM: hi guys !
20:21:08 TylerM: maybe we'll get a check soon too!
20:21:12 darkblueB: it was almost as if.. realizing that they were perhaps not completely up on outside developer things, that they put SoC forward as sort of "see, we *are* doing things"
20:21:14 TylerM: : )
20:21:29 darkblueB: and of course, SoC is a great suceess
20:22:10 TylerM: darkblue_B: what were you up to today?
20:22:41 darkblueB: I volunteered to do a half hour presentation on "advanced topics" for Google at their all day workshop
20:22:55 darkblueB: .. titled "presenting your cause with Google Earth"
20:23:04 darkblueB: to mainly nonprofits in the ecology realm
20:23:22 TylerM: all right, good work
20:23:26 darkblueB: for it, I got the after hours cocktail party thing, though tankfully not much booze ( I dont drink )
20:23:42 TylerM: heh.. beer's a waste on my too : )
20:23:50 darkblueB: and I was just telling FrankW, I got some Face Time with some higher ups at Google
20:24:12 darkblueB: .. and brought up the OSGeo cause, among other things
20:24:30 darkblueB: I think it went over well
20:24:33 TylerM: yeah i saw - it'd be great to have a bigger group help host or encourage a california chapter : )
20:24:43 darkblueB: well I was just getting to that
20:24:58 darkblueB: Google definitely offers monthly meeting hosting to other groups
20:25:22 darkblueB: I really dont want to put a huge amount of effort into that now though if attendance is a challenge
20:25:46 darkblueB: so I thought out loud that mayber we should dtart with being close to major conferences
20:25:49 darkblueB: ..instead
20:26:01 darkblueB: I have gone through this with some other user groups
20:26:02 TylerM: other chapters are doing that as well, not a bad approach
20:26:21 TylerM: espeecially ones trying to get started
20:28:05 darkblueB: the libkml engineers are based there in Mtn View
20:28:29 darkblueB: a bunch of things just depend on the winds
20:28:48 TylerM: hah
20:29:08 darkblueB: may of the other spatial engineers are not in Mtn View I think
20:29:19 darkblueB: the customer support people are there
20:29:23 darkblueB: many
20:30:54 darkblueB: one of the guys in the audience tonight.. just sat, never said anything.. after the talk, a long while after, he gave me his card
20:31:04 darkblueB: turns out he is a NY lawyer, with 13 years in the OGC !
20:31:13 darkblueB: one never knows
20:31:42 FrankW: darkblue_B: do you recall his name?
20:31:47 TylerM: sounds like an interesting group
20:32:02 darkblueB: Bruce Cahan
20:32:14 FrankW: Hmm, not familiar to me.
20:32:45 darkblueB: apparently he was part of something that ended up being crucial in 9/11 response way back when
20:32:53 darkblueB: or so the Internet story goes
20:33:04 darkblueB: ( I looked it up just now )
20:33:25 darkblueB: also part of some things that I consider to be important work on the social side
20:33:30 darkblueB: so, complex character
20:34:08 TylerM: darkblue_B: Mike L. is interested in seeing OSGeo move in the valley too, in case you need more contacts.. http://www.iftf.org/user/12
20:34:10 sigq: Title: Michael Liebhold | Institute For The Future ( at www.iftf.org )
20:34:18 TylerM: of course there are others
20:34:32 darkblueB: Mike L! I am a Mike L fan ;- )
20:34:39 darkblueB: and I dont say that about many people
20:35:05 TylerM: ah, i see he's already on the california mailing list
20:35:31 darkblueB: that list is pretty quiet
20:35:39 darkblueB: I joined as per someone's suggestion
20:35:54 TylerM: yeah i see ya
21:24:10 wildintellect: darkblue_B, we've been thinking of having a planning meeting in the Norcal region sometime soon - and a BOF or other meeting at the Where conf next spring would be good too

22:48:20 CameronShorter: I'm here for the marketing meeting in 10 minutes. I'm on a bus and internet connection is a bit flaky, so I appologise in advance if I drop out.
22:50:06 wildintellect: I thought It was tomorrow
22:51:28 wildintellect: CameronShorter, I'm pretty sure you're a day early for the meeting http://timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?year=2008&month=10&day=22&hour=7&min=0&sec=0
22:51:29 sigq: Title: The Fixed Time World Clock ( at timeanddate.com )
22:53:21 CameronShorter: ah, so I am. Thanks wildintellect.
22:55:59 wildintellect: I like the "arramagong" but I question it's practical application, I spend enough time with people arguing over the pronunciation of Ubuntu or for that matter Linux
23:00:14 CameronShorter: wildintellect, fair comment, although I not expecting to change the name. ( Our marketing guys like it, and I prefer to focus on tech bits and let others worry about what we call it.
23:01:17 wildintellect: fair enough, but I hesitate to use that for the official osgeo or anything outside Australia where it will take 5 min to explain the name
23:02:30 wildintellect: so I guess the question is, is this a Lisasoft venture or a community project with Lisasoft support?
23:03:07 CameronShorter: I'm hoping it will become a community project.
23:03:39 wildintellect: then I don't know if having your company arbitrarily decide the name is a good idea for community sake
23:04:15 CameronShorter: noted.
23:04:30 CameronShorter: Your issue is that the name is too difficult to say?
23:04:37 wildintellect: and understand
23:04:47 CameronShorter: Maybe find a simple name like "skype"?
23:04:55 wildintellect: right
23:06:27 wildintellect: so the windows usb thing is PortableGIS, why not something like LiveGIS
23:07:57 wildintellect: if we stick with something generic at least for naming the trac/svn then we're always open to a more creative name later
23:08:05 CameronShorter: Possible, but so many of our GeoFOSS names contain derivatives of "Open" and "Geospatial" in it.
23:08:34 CameronShorter: We were hoping to get a name that was more memorable.
23:10:55 wildintellect: like I said make the svn/trac generic and readable, then we can discuss finding a good exciting name
23:11:36 wildintellect: terrago
23:11:48 wildintellect: latin for "Live Earth" roughly
23:12:16 wildintellect: terra+ago
23:12:26 wildintellect: could even flip it agoterra
23:12:56 CameronShorter: Your feedback is good, I'll forward back through the LISAsoft team tomorrow and see if we get anywhere. Might be good to put your thoughts into an email and see if others agree.
23:13:14 wildintellect: lol, can't use terrago, that's a company that make Geopdf
23:13:39 wildintellect: but agoterra is still ok
23:15:07 wildintellect: I'm sure your marketing people can come up with some better ones, just remind them, simple and fairly pronounceable
23:16:16 CameronShorter: ok
23:16:47 wildintellect: as someone who hands out many discs, I appreciate it - thanks
