03:46:36 : <_wolf_> aghisla: hi
03:46:51 : <_wolf_> did you see the feedback for your proposal?
03:46:53 aghisla: hello _wolf_!
03:47:35 aghisla: I did, and just edited the proposal accordingly
03:47:46 aghisla: I needed some time to document myself : )
03:48:19 : <_wolf_> cool : )
03:48:32 : <_wolf_> I just got back and happened to notice you are online : )
03:49:43 aghisla: _wolf_: are there many students proposals for osgeo?
03:50:26 : <_wolf_> not too many, but there is still thw most of this week left
03:50:49 : <_wolf_> so far all proposals have been quite good quality : )
03:52:11 : <_wolf_> aghisla: thanks, the update is good : )
03:52:41 aghisla: _wolf_: it makes the project clearer but a bit harder : )
03:56:58 : <_wolf_> hard is good, as long as it is not too hard : )
03:58:02 aghisla: hope so
04:03:13 SmokeyD: any people here that are knowledgeable on the google summer of code project?
05:07:07 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: aye. I'm the SoC admin
05:07:28 : <_wolf_> for OSGeo that is
05:09:52 SmokeyD: _wolf_: hi, sorry, somehow pidgin isn't playing sound anymore when someone mentions my nick. Gotta fix that.
05:10:19 SmokeyD: _wolf_: I was wondering. I graduated last september from my MSc, so I am not a student anymore and therefore not elegible for the SOC
05:10:59 SmokeyD: but people over at #gsoc said that it might be possible to find a mentor willing to tutor me off the record, and of course without receiving a stipend from google
05:11:15 : <_wolf_> that might be possible
05:11:26 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: which project are you interested in?
05:12:59 SmokeyD: _wolf_: well, in general: any. But I do have some idea. First of all I am not a C programmer. So GDAL and stuff is to much for me I think.
05:13:13 SmokeyD: I am current on python though
05:13:19 SmokeyD: and most things web-related
05:14:05 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: for web we have many projects, and if you like GUI design GRASS could use another pair of hands :D
05:14:28 SmokeyD: _wolf_: cool. : )
05:14:32 : <_wolf_> QGIS is also an option, but it is qt, but has python bindings
05:15:34 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: have a look at our SoC ideas page http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_2009_Ideas and see if you find anything interesting
05:15:35 sigq: Title: Google Summer of Code 2009 Ideas - OSGeo Wiki ( at wiki.osgeo.org )
05:15:48 SmokeyD: _wolf_: I have visited Africn and latin american countries during my studies a lot ( I am an ecolotist ) and if I could work on making GIS software for those areas, or NGO's or other users working in those areas, that would be even cooler
05:16:40 SmokeyD: _wolf_: I will. I will start thinking on it today and write something down. How should I approach this since I can't follow the official routes through google?
05:16:42 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: cool. Welcome to GRASS :D you'll fit right in
05:16:49 SmokeyD: :D
05:17:47 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: you can simply contact the GRASS developers list at grass-dev@lists.osgeo.org and state your case. Start by downloading the GRASS code, and give it a try
05:17:53 : <_wolf_> if you haven't already
05:19:33 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: for the gui we use the wxPython toolkit, so you should get yourself acquainted to that too
05:19:58 SmokeyD: _wolf_: ok, cool. I was afraid GRASS would be C or something. Or is it a mix?
05:20:17 : <_wolf_> The modules are C, but the GUI is Python
05:20:29 : <_wolf_> the advantage that you have over SoCers is that you will be automatically accepted :D
05:20:39 : <_wolf_> plus you can start immediately :P
05:20:48 SmokeyD: _wolf_: :D
05:21:37 SmokeyD: this is really nice : ) Thanks a lot, you really know how to make people enthousiastic
05:21:38 SmokeyD: : )
05:23:59 SmokeyD: _wolf_: just to know, which webbased projects would also be interested to tutor someone? I think I would like to dive into GRASS, but on the other hand, I am using webbased stuff a lot as well and am also current in ( X )HTML, css, javascript, php, webbased python stuff, etc
05:26:43 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: I think all would welcome a new motivated developer. I'm myself mainly a GRASS developer so I can't say. For instance OpenLayers people are too busy to mentor for SoC, which would hint that they'd welcome a new developer
05:28:31 : <_wolf_> Mapbender is php + javascript, so that might be to your liking.
05:30:18 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: as outside of SoC the pick is pretty much yours, most will welcome new developers with open arms and give you pointers. You might not get a single mentor, but rather the whole developer community ; )
05:33:12 SmokeyD: _wolf_: thanks a lot for your help. I will ponder on it today and think about what I would like to do and where to go. I might approach you again in a few days if you don't mind
05:34:46 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: sure thing. Welcome to the OSGeo community : ) I'll be around, feel free to contact me, whenever you see me
05:35:12 : <_wolf_> I'll gladly help you get started : )
05:38:30 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: I suppose there is no point in answering your email to the soc list, is there?
05:41:05 SmokeyD: :D
05:41:06 SmokeyD: nope
05:41:22 SmokeyD: _wolf_: sorry for cross posting
05:43:45 : <_wolf_> SmokeyD: no worries! :D
05:44:06 : <_wolf_> morning TylerM! : )
05:45:39 TylerM: good day _wolf_
09:09:35 sigq: osgeofeed: Ticket #347 ( task created ): PostGIS SVN post-commit hooks <http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/347>
11:54:49 FrankW: TylerM: I took care of Christine's account problem. Perhaps I neglected to cc: info with the reply?
11:55:35 TylerM: hi FrankW - ah okay, yeah i didn't read anything further on it.
11:55:56 FrankW: I replied to a few of the requests last week and tried to reply to info.
11:56:12 FrankW: There are several I did not reply to, in which case I assume you will end up picking them up.
11:56:15 TylerM: I saw that, thanks.. I was able to skip them.
12:11:05 tomkralidis: hobu: is trac down? Throwing 500s
12:12:26 TylerM: tomkralidis: better now?
12:13:24 TylerM: loaded okay for me just now
12:13:27 TylerM: was a bit slow though
12:13:51 tomkralidis: TylerM: same thing. http://trac.osgeo.org/mapserver/
12:13:53 tomkralidis: wierd
12:14:32 FrankW: the load average is through the roof right now on osgeo1.
12:14:38 tomkralidis: now I get a "database is locked" error
12:15:57 jasonbirch: That happens to me often at night ( 11:00 PST and on )
12:18:05 FrankW: I see the automatic backup is running on osgeo1 which often seems to hammer the disk badly.
12:18:45 tomkralidis: the autobackup runs in the mid-pm? Mind you, it's always mid-pm somewhere
12:18:51 hobu: not the ideal time for such a thing
12:19:50 FrankW: I believe it runs several times a day though I don't know the details.

19:31:42 wildintellect: TylerM, you missed all the fun last week
19:32:15 wildintellect: the convention idiots lost the order for furniture, and I had to shove my cc'd copy in their face
19:32:52 wildintellect: also I got us a non-binding reservation for next year
19:33:19 wildintellect: I should be able to get it all written up and posted in the next few days, now that I can actually think
19:34:07 TylerM: gah - hi wildintellect !
19:34:16 TylerM: I'm not really here.. great to hear you survived

19:34:56 TylerM: got the brochures?
19:35:10 wildintellect: yes, they rocked
19:35:21 TylerM: wahoo.. we'll talk about shipping some
19:35:26 wildintellect: gave out ~400, well most of 1 box
19:45:07 TylerM: no way.. that's great
19:48:29 wildintellect: oh we we're quite popular
19:48:44 wildintellect: 4 of us non-stop for 2:30 hours opening night
19:49:15 wildintellect: was it 500 per box?
19:50:37 TylerM: there was 100 total, that's all I know : )
19:56:27 wildintellect: you mean 1000
19:57:51 wildintellect: mini-report is up on the page now, including pic http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/AAG_2009
