08:56:14 TylerM: anyone familiar with gpsbabel's shapefile output support? someone is asking me for a library for gps->gis and wondering if this is it
09:00:50 TylerM: it spits out a shx and shp file but alas, no dbf
09:03:21 crschmidt: generally GPS data doesn't have attributes that you would need in a .dbf
09:03:28 crschmidt: what were you imagining such a dbf file would contain?
09:03:51 TylerM: yeah i don't really care, but the file is broken without it
09:04:04 TylerM: either way, the output i get is junk.. so no matter
09:04:50 TylerM: it says "crude support for shapefile".. heh to be sure
09:06:29 crschmidt: TylerM: hm, i'm pretty sure shapefiles don't require a .dbf file to work; at the very least, OGR has support for shapefiles with no corresponding .dbf
09:06:35 crschmidt: TylerM: but if it's busted, it's busted : )
09:06:59 TylerM: hmm ok.. i think i'd need waypoint attributes anyway
09:07:37 crschmidt: ah, okay
09:07:53 crschmidt: most GPX -> Shapefile tranlsation stuff I've seen doesn't maintain any kind of attributes
09:07:59 crschmidt: but it's usually handling tracks
09:08:01 crschmidt: not waypoints
09:08:22 crschmidt: did the GDAL GPX driver not do what you wanted it to?
09:09:29 TylerM: yeah i'll push him toward OGR
09:10:05 TylerM: i can do it in python myself already, but was hoping for a simpler solution for gps device directly to shapefile
09:10:20 TylerM: But seems he'll have to do that reading part separately
09:11:01 TylerM: or just give in and tell him to use kml instead ; ) since gpsbabel supports it better
09:26:36 crschmidt: yeah, KML might be a reasonable solution
09:28:06 wildintellect: KML would better anyways to ensure the date/time stays a date/time
